As part of a major redevelopment of the L.A. LIVE campus in downtown Los Angeles, AEG transformed Chick Hearn Court from a vehicular roadway into a large-scale public plaza connecting Crypto.com Arena, Peacock Theater, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and surrounding hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The project created more than 250,000 square feet of pedestrian-focused public space designed to support large event crowds and year-round programming.
Anthony James Partners served as Technology Consultant for the project, responsible for the design, procurement, and construction oversight of the digital display systems integrated into the new plaza media towers. The display program was a central element of the redevelopment, intended to create a high-impact media environment comparable to major entertainment districts such as Times Square while maintaining compatibility with the architectural and structural design of the new plaza.
The project includes ten custom media towers positioned along Chick Hearn Court, including three towers approximately 58 feet tall and seven towers approximately 37 feet tall. The towers combine architectural steel structures, lighting, audio, and digital displays to create a coordinated media installation integrated into the public space.
AJP led the concept development and technical design of the curved LED display systems installed on the primary towers, including screen geometry, structural interface requirements, content visibility studies, brightness and environmental performance criteria, and integration with the plaza control and content systems. The design required close coordination with the tower fabricator, structural engineers, and electrical engineers to ensure that the display systems could be safely supported while maintaining the architectural intent of the twisting truss structures.
AJP also managed the competitive procurement process for the LED display systems, prepared technical specifications, evaluated vendor proposals, and assisted AEG with vendor selection. SNA Displays was awarded the LED display contract following the AJP-led RFP process.
During construction, AJP provided ongoing coordination, submittal review, and installation oversight to confirm that the displays, structural attachments, power, data, and control systems were installed in accordance with the design intent. The work required detailed coordination with ongoing plaza construction and strict scheduling around major events at the adjacent arena and theater.
The completed installation transforms Chick Hearn Court into a programmable media environment capable of supporting live events, sponsorship activations, public art, and broadcast content, while reinforcing L.A. LIVE’s role as one of the premier entertainment destinations in the United States.
Architecture for the plaza and tower structures was led by Poon Design Inc., with structural engineering by John A. Martin & Associates, civil engineering by KPFF, lighting and electrical engineering by ME Engineers, tower fabrication by LA Propoint, and construction by PCL Construction, working for owner AEG Worldwide.
