Anthony James Partners Designs New LED Display and Audio Systems for UNC’s Kenan Stadium
Technology modernization includes new end-zone videoboards, ribbon displays, and a redesigned stadium-wide sound system
CHAPEL HILL, NC — Anthony James Partners (AJP) is serving as Technology Consultant for a major modernization project at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium. Technology upgrades include new end-zone videoboards, ribbon displays, and a redesigned stadium-wide audio system. Construction is currently underway, with the upgraded systems scheduled to be operational for the 2026 football season.
“Kenan Stadium is one of the most recognizable venues in college athletics, and projects like this require a thoughtful balance between preserving tradition and delivering the technology that today’s fans expect,” said Michael Rowe, Chief Executive Officer of Anthony James Partners. “The challenge isn’t simply installing bigger displays or a new sound system. It’s understanding how those systems will be used, how they support the fan experience, and how they create value for the university over the long term.”
AJP provided technology planning, system design, procurement support, and construction administration services for the project. Working alongside university stakeholders, architects, engineers, and technology vendors, the AJP team developed a modernization strategy designed to enhance the fan experience while supporting the university’s long-term operational and business objectives.
LED DISPLAY SYSTEM UPGRADES
The project includes two new end-zone LED displays measuring approximately 31.5 feet high by 106.5 feet wide and nine ribbon displays distributed throughout the seating bowl. Collectively, the LED display network provides more than 10,000 square feet of digital canvas and over 14.7 million LEDs capable of supporting live video, game statistics, sponsorship messaging, and dynamic content presentation.
The new display systems were designed to support a wide range of content and operational requirements, providing UNC Athletics with greater flexibility to deliver engaging game presentations while creating additional opportunities for sponsorship activation and partner visibility throughout the venue.
AUDIO SYSTEM UPGRADES
The project also includes a comprehensive replacement of the stadium’s audio infrastructure. AJP’s design features a hybrid audio architecture consisting of multiple distributed loudspeaker systems integrated with a large scoreboard-mounted point-source system utilizing Fulcrum Acoustics loudspeakers. Steerable line source technology, Powersoft Unica cloud-based amplifiers, and a QSC DSP platform provide advanced system control and performance throughout the venue.
Engineered to prioritize speech intelligibility while supporting the high-output program material required for NCAA Division I football, the new system is designed to deliver consistent coverage and uniform sound quality throughout Kenan Stadium. The upgraded audio infrastructure will support game presentation, public address announcements, and other venue operations while providing a more impactful and intelligible game-day experience for fans.
