LARGEST SCOREBOARD IN COLLEGE SPORTS
Designed by Anthony James Partners in close collaboration with the University of Illinois, the new South End Zone primary videoboard at Gies Memorial Stadium dramatically elevates scale and performance.
AJP supported the University of Illinois’ comprehensive technology modernization of Gies Memorial Stadium, providing planning, system design, procurement support, and construction administration for the LED display, audio, and broadcast systems. The project required extensive coordination of structural, infrastructure, power, data, and technology systems to accommodate one of the most ambitious collegiate stadium technology upgrades completed to date.
The project is anchored by a new South End Zone videoboard measuring approximately 69 feet high by 250 feet wide. At more than 17,300 square feet, it is the largest videoboard in college football and the centerpiece of a stadium-wide LED display network totaling more than 26,700 square feet across 16 displays. Featuring approximately 16.1 million pixels, the primary videoboard delivers a 195 percent increase in resolution over the previous display while supporting live video, instant replay, statistics, graphics, sponsorship messaging, and game presentation content.
Supporting the expanded LED scope required significant structural and foundation upgrades, engineered in collaboration with LYBD Engineers.
Beyond the LED systems, AJP designed new stadium audio and broadcast infrastructure while coordinating the structural, power, data, and technology requirements necessary to support the installation. Integrated audio in the scoreboard, along with a new stadium sound system design, is in the works. AJP is also supporting Illinois with broadcast system and infrastructure upgrades.
The result is a modern, scalable technology platform that enhances the fan experience while supporting the University’s long-term operational and event presentation goals.
Daktronics was the awarded LED vendor following a competitive procurement process. Project completed for the start of the 2026 college football season.
